The Kenai Foundation
The Kenai Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to finding and promoting enduring solutions to environmental and social issues. We're trying to make a real difference by digging below the surface to tackle the root causes of the problems.
The two areas we have elected to focus on initially are the promotion, preservation and conservation of habitat, and access to education.
Why Conservation?
Loss of natural habitat is the single largest threat to the biodiversity of our planet.
The human population is growing at an unprecedented rate. In 1950 there were around 2.5 billion people on Earth, today there are over 6 billion, and by 2050 it is predicted that there will be more than 9 billion of us. This explosion in the number of people is putting extreme pressure on the natural environment; our activities are damaging and destroying the habitats of plants and animals worldwide.
One of the biggest challenges that lies ahead of us as a human race is to achieve a balance between our needs as a growing population and those of the natural world. If we don't protect the lands and waters that the plants, animals and natural communities of our Earth need to survive, then the complex web of life will collapse. Not only will we lose the wonderful and enormously rich diversity of life around us, but ultimately we will destroy the resources upon which we ourselves depend.
Why Education?
Everyone has the right to education. Basic education provides people with the means to participate in today's world; it provides understanding of basic healthcare, an opportunity to break free from poverty and the awareness and tolerance needed to live with social and environmental responsibility. For those that have received it, education is a wealth that can never be taken away.
Yet over 103 million children around the world don't go to school. We think that they deserve the chance at life that so many of us take for granted.
Activities
As a small organisation, we recognise that our independent activities will only have a limited impact. But by partnering with multiple organisations across the world, we're able to reach further in our quest to succeed at regional, national and global levels.
We're also developing a program of activities in partnership with local Colorado schools, communities and business.
